The Newly Redesigned Subaru WRX earns Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety

The 2015 Subaru WRX, a small, sporty car, earns the IIHS Top Safety Pick award for good performance in each of the Institute's crashworthiness evaluations, including the small overlap front test.

This is the first time IIHS has rated the WRX, which was completely redesigned for 2015. Although it shares some design elements with the Subaru Impreza, there are sufficient differences for the vehicles to be rated separately.

In the small overlap test, the structure of the WRX held up, and the driver's space was maintained well. The dummy's movement was well-controlled, and measures taken from the dummy indicated a low risk of any significant injuries. The dummy's head made good contact with the front airbag, which stayed in position during the crash. The side airbag deployed with enough forward coverage to protect the head from contact with side structure and outside objects.
 

The Institute introduced the small overlap evaluation in 2012. In the test, which is more challenging than either the head-on crashes conducted by the government or the IIHS moderate overlap test, 25 percent of a vehicle's front end on the driver's side strikes a rigid barrier at 40 mph. The crash replicates what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object such as a tree or utility pole.

The WRX also earned good ratings in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests.

With the addition of the WRX, Subaru now has six models that have earned 2014 safety awards from IIHS — three with Top Safety Pick and three with Top Safety Pick+. To qualify for Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must earn a good or acceptable rating for small overlap protection and a good rating in the other four tests. The "plus" is awarded to vehicles that meet those criteria and also earn a rating of basic or higher for front crash prevention.

Subaru unveiled the next-gen 2015 Subaru Outback at the New York International Auto Show, kicking off what the company promises to be yet another record sales year.

The 2015 Subaru Outback is the sixth product generation in 20 years since Subaru introduced the first Outback. Then as now, it’s a close sibling to the Subaru Legacy wagon. Production of the redesigned 2015 Subaru Outback starts in June. It starts reaching showrooms early this summer.

Pricing will be “in line with the outgoing model,” said Tom Doll, president and COO of Subaru of America, based in Cherry Hill, N.J.“Never mess with success,” was the mandate for redesigning the Subaru Outback, and Subaru didn’t, Doll said at the auto show press conference on April 17.

To the naked eye, the new model has sharper lines but it’s got a strong family resemblance to the old model. Over the product generations, the Subaru Legacy and the Outback have gotten progressively larger. The styling has gotten more attractive and the handling has improved.

But the core attributes – all-wheel drive, car-like handling and cargo space haven’t changed, Doll said. The new model has virtually the same exterior dimensions as the model it replaces, but there’s a bit more rear legroom and a bit more cargo space in the back.

While the appearance hasn’t changed radically, Subaru has made some significant moves in the area of high-tech safety features, including a new version of its (optional) EyeSight camera system, so called because it uses two cameras working in stereo to measure how far away objects are.

The system is behind Subaru’s “front crash prevention system,” which detects a potential crash based
on the closing distance to a car or an object ahead. Subaru has good reason not to mess with success,
because its recent success has been remarkableThe U.S. company has more than doubled its sales
since 2008, to around 425,000 units in 2013, its fifth consecutive all-time sales record.

Yasuyuki Yoshinaga, president and CEO of parent company Fuji Heavy Industries in Japan, said at
the New York press conference the company expects to make it six in a row in 2014, with a sales
target of around 460,000. The parent company had worldwide record sales of about 830,000 units
in 2013, an increase of about 17 percent from 2012, he said. Yoshinaga said the U.S. market stays on
the front burner in 2014 and beyond, in terms of future investment: “We will continue to consider the
U.S. our most important market.”

Subaru continues to enhance its driving assist technology "EyeSight" which is based on recognition abilities using a stereo camera system. The system processes the images gained from its stereo camera and recognizes the object before an accident occurs. The 2015 Outback will be available with a “full-perimeter preventive safety” system. The rear radar system offers three functions. Blind Spot Detection detects vehicles behind the C-pillars and in other blind spots; Lane Change Assist detects approaching vehicles when changing lanes, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert detects close vehicles while reversing, such as out of a parking space or driveway. LED indicators on the side mirrors alert the driver. Rear Cross Traffic Alert uses an indicator in the rear view camera display.

FHI’s recent development of the next-generation "EyeSight" shows just how committed the Subaru brand is to safety. And they are doing it across their whole lineup of multi-use vehicles. Building safe vehicles is not new for the Japanese automaker. They began their own independent crash tests in the 1960s before there was any official testing being conducted. Subaru has enhanced the already excellent EyeSight system which will begin arriving in all new Subaru models starting next year. Expect 2015 Subaru Outback to come with three key features

The all-new 2015 Subaru Outback will make its global debut at the New York International Auto Show 2014 in April. Will Subaru make major changes?

Outback will continue with its high profile ride, and taller stance that makes the wagon easy to get in and out of. The new 2015 Outback will likely get a new upgraded interior with new soft-touch materials. But don’t look for wholesale changes to the Outback. Subaru will stick with got them to the dance in the first place.
Subaru will stay with the core values that have made the Outback a success. The popular wagon started with the core values of good visibility, cargo carrying ability and versatility. It has remained true to those core values with all their multi-use vehicles, and they won’t be changing now with the new-generation Outback.
The secret to Subaru’s success has been for them to stick to the basics, and then keep improving on them every year and with every new generation. Another core value is staying with their excellent Symmetrical all-wheel-drive that comes in every Subaru vehicle except for the two-door BRZ sports car.
All 2015 Outback trim levels will likely be equipped with a newly refined version of the Active Torque Split version of Symmetrical AWD. An electronically managed continuously variable transfer clutch actively controls torque distribution in response to driving conditions and wheel slippage. The system can send additional torque to the rear wheels either pro-actively or in response to slippage at the front wheels. Outback will continue to be an ideal multi-use vehicle for recreational use for those with adventurous spirits.

The newest Subaru wagon will also be getting the newly-tuned Lineartronic CVT automatic transmission. If it’s like the 2015 Legacy, Subaru will likely drop the six-speed manual gearbox and five-speed adaptive electronic automatic transmission in favor of the new CVT. This will improve the current 30/24 highway/city fuel mileage considerably. Look for the new Outback to also get 36 mpg highway with the 2.5i model.
Both the 2.5-liter Boxer four-cylinder and the 3.6-liter six-cylinder will continue on the new Outback multi-use vehicle. Both will be mated to the Lineartronic CVT for improved fuel-mileage. Subaru bumped up the 2.5-liter four 2 hp and Outback should see the same increase. The wagon will still come in base 2.5i, Premium and Limited trim models.

Both sedan and hatchback versions are well-rounded packages, with nimble handling and an impressively compliant, absorbent ride that’s among the best in its class. Fuel economy is also commendable for an AWD car. And the Impreza is easy to live with, thanks to a roomy interior, spacious rear seat, simple controls, and refreshingly good visibility. Another great example of projection mapping by Subaru. They unveiled the New Forester by having robotic arms assemble the drive train on stage and thrust it into the body of the vehicle, then proceeded to immerse you in a surreal world of animation. CHECK OUT THIS AWESOME VIDEO!

2015 Subaru Legacy - LEAKED IMAGES

 ALL NEW 2015 SUBARU LEGACY

 

 

It only took Subaru a couple of months after displaying the Legacy Concept at the 2013 LA Auto Show in late November to tease and announce the world premiere of the production version of the mid-size sedan that will officially break cover at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show on February 6. 

 

As you may suspect, the Japanese automaker didn't reveal much about the car, but if you insist on reading the press blurb, here it is:
"The all-new Legacy is a mid-size sports sedan which offers enhanced driveability and functionality while achieving a design required for a flagship model with a quality feel.



 

 Its styling fused with functionality such as roominess and visibility embodies the design direction proposed by the "Legacy Concept" at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show."
From the single darkened picture offered by Subaru, we see that the 2015 Legacy appears to be somewhat closer to the concept in design than other studies have in the past, with the production car gaining a taller (and more practical) roof- and profile window-lines, and a less stubby front end.
